A Look At The Cost Of Living In The Past 60 Years
It's Saturday night and you're going out.
How much will it cost you compared to generations past?
- One gallon of regular unleaded gas?
- One movie ticket?
- One pint of beer?
- One Yankees ticket?
Now, what about basic living prices?
Here's a comparison you can't miss:
The cost or rent has gone up nearly 750% from the 1960s to 2000. Adjusting for inflation, the increase comes in at 46%.
The value of homes has risen 905% since the '60s. With inflation, the increase is still a whopping 73%.
*The cost of college has skyrocketed over the years as well.
Private nonprofit four-year college costs have gone up nearly 400% since the '80s. Even when accounting for inflation, students at these universities have seen a 129% increase over the past three decades.
Public nonprofit four-year college students have fared worse. Tuition has increased by 571% since the late '80s. Accounting for inflation, that price has gone up 213%.
