The Value of Microlearning in a Digital World Infographic

While it is hardly a new concept, microlearning is a valuable tool whose popularity is growing in the digital world. It describes the process of building successful behaviors through
small, focused steps with each segment lasting no longer than 3 to 5 minutes. These bite-sized learning nuggets can be connected or stand alone, but most importantly they should be paced by the learner and easily accessible on-demand.

Microlearning is focused on specific learning outcomes, and can be used as a supplementary element of formal training or part of a blended approach. Popular microlearning platforms include videos, quizzes, games and more recently, Digital Adoption Platforms (DAPs). Using contextual, engaging training, DAP provides mini-training session to users in the moment they need to learn, rather than in additional training.

Consider how employees access information outside of the workplace — snippets of news stories, short exchanges on social media and fast paced entertainment media. The human brain is easily overwhelmed by large amounts of information, in fact, the average person can only remember four things at one time.

By utilizing short-form informative bites, trainers can capitalize on micro learning benefits such as higher comprehension, reduced training time, increased flexibility and higher ROI. Practices such as spacing and repetition help move information from the short-term memory into long-term memory, where it can be retained and retrieved for smoother workflow.
