How a Flipped Classroom Works Infographic

In 2008 in Colorado, two chemistry teachers, Jonathan Bergmann and Aaron Sams had an idea: they purchased some software and filmed themselves giving lectures. They then posted it online for students to access. It was a success for the students – increasing engagement and freeing up time in class. For the teachers, it was an Eureka moment. The How a Flipped Classroom Works Infographic enables teachers to rethink how classroom time can be used.

Experiment Results

  • Absent students appreciated the opportunity to see what they missed.
  • Present students used the online material to review and reinforce the classroom lessons.
  • Teachers radically rethink the way they use classroom time.

How a Flipped Classroom Model Works

  • Teacher creates videos and interactive lessons to be accessed by students before class.
  • Class is used to work through problems, advance concepts and engage in collaborative learning.
  • All aspects of instruction are rethought to maximise use of time.
  • It’s not the instructional videos on their own, but how they are integrated into an overall approach, that makes the difference.

The Outcomes of a Flipped Classroom

  • Fosters better student-teacher relationships
  • Greater student engagement
  • Higher levels of motivation
  • More time with struggling students
  • Students have freedom to learn independently
  • Teacher has more time to probe for misconceptions and clear up incorrect notions

Instructional videos, interactive simulations and other yet-to-be-dreamed-up online tools will equip teachers to create content, share resources, and improve practice. The idea of flipping your classroom can be both appealing and intimidating. It gets you, the teacher, out of your comfort zone, but in return enables you to spend more time coaching your students as they engage in meaningful tasks and interactions in class.

Additionally, at the The Flipped Classroom Guide for Teachers you will be able to see in more detail how a flipped classroom contributes to student learning, the top benefits and disadvantages of a flipped classroom, and last but not least, how to successfully flip your classroom.
